Everyone is trying to be happy!
The author of this book shows that this universal longing of man is none other than the search for a happiness focused on the principle of our own pleasure. The author defines it as a “plastic” happiness.
The central thesis of this book is, on the contrary, that happiness is part of the great and paradoxical intrinsic mysteries in the gospel: whoever wants to save his life will lose it, said Jesus, but whoever loses their life for love of me and the gospel, will save it. We don’t find happiness when we try to satisfy our desires but when, regardless of ourselves, we stop searching for it and we give ourselves to others. We receive when we give, we are happy when we live for God and not for ourselves.
René Breuel is pastor of the Evangelical Church of San Lorenzo (now named Hopera) in Rome and writes the blog Wonderingfair.com.
